MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
THE MIDLAND RAILWAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 22nd April. Besidents of tho . city and province learned to-day with regret of the coming early retirement of Messrs. "W. A. and A. E. Dee, who intend to soil out tho 72 years' old firm of Dec and Sons, tailors and bootsellors, owing to health reasons. It was away back in 1859 wheu the Urni was founded by tho late Mr. ii. "W. Dee, and tho business, therefore, is one of the oldest iv tho Dominion.
Although nominations for the Mayoralty, City Council, Harbour Board, and Hospital Board close at noon on Friday, very few. candidates have yet been announced.: For.the Mayoralty, Mr. W. J. Moffatt, the present Mayor, !is the only candidate announced so far. ' For nine soats on the City Council two nominations had been received up to 3 o'clock to-day—Messrs. W. Bfack and F. W. Huggins (sitting member). It is understood that Mr. H. B. Duncan, chairman of the iSTolson Harbour Board, is not offering himself for re-election to that body. Three scats have to be filled on the Hospital Board, and two of the retiring members, Mrs. Watson and Major Dagger, have been nominated. A meeting called last evening for the purpose of forming an aero club in Nelson was very poorly attended, less than a dozen people being present. The provisional committee had gone to a good deal of trouble in. collecting information, and regret was expressed that so little interest was apparent in the movement, judging by the attendance. It was decided in the circumstances not to go on with the mectmThe Optimists' Club of the V.M.C.A. of Nelson is beginning the fifth year of its history,, the first meeting of the present xyear being held yesterday. There was a full attendance of members and a number of visitors, amongst whom were Mr. W. J. Moffatt (Mayor of Nelson) and Mr. H. W. Kelly (Mayor of Richmond). A meeting of .the..Nelson Progross League was held yesterday afternoon. Eailway matters were the primary consideration, and a resolution was passed protesting against tho further removal of rails from the Midland Line, and requesting that the Government investigate the possibility of using men nowlisted as unemployed on such a national work A sub-committee was appointed to draft a reply to a letter receivod from the Prime Minister on the construction of the Midland Lino.
