NO. 5 SCHEME TO RESUME
UNDER OLD CONDITIONS
Though the Minister of Labour .(the Hon. S. G. Smith) has not yet made a comprehensive statement regarding the resumption of work on Monday un- ; dor. the No. 5 scheme, it is stated, that work will be resumed then under, the same conditions as before its temporary suspension.. Tho allocation of men,to the various .jobs will be cpmnienecd by the Labour. Department tomorrow. ..-.-■ '■■,". ■.■..-■■.. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) stated to-day that all the works previously in harid under, the supervision'of the City Council would, as far as ho knew, be resumed where they were left off, with the 'exception, of the foundations for the Campanile, which it had been found cheaper :to. allow the contractor to finish. ,'••■■ ' '■.-.'■••' There is at present no indication from the Goyernment; as to the, period for which' this arrangement will continue, but if the men. apply as freely for.work as formerly about 2500 will be absorbed on local body.works in Wellington during the week commencing on Monday. The 4, 4a, and 4b schemes, under which farm work generally, farm work on wages subsidy, and farm work on contract subsidy may be carried on, are still available to absorb labour.
