LONDON, 21st April. The British Empire has recognised the Spanish Republic.

The British Government, respecting the incognito of Alfonso as the Duke of Toledo, was not represented at his arrival at Victoria Station, where democratic crowds gave the ex-King a tumultuous welcome, contested with tho quietness of his landing at Dover. Alfonso was driven in ' a car to Claridgo's Hotel, escorted by mounted and foot police. The ex-King Manoel of Portugal greeted him in the foyer.
