AUSTRALIANS SUFFEK
DRIFT TO WORKHOUSES
(Received 21st April, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 20th April. No fewer than 270 distressed .. Aua» tralians have sought the .help of Aus«' ti'alia Houso since Ist January. Officials are at their wits 3 end how to help them. There is now no benevolent fund, and the distressed ovon include tourists unable to get remittances. At least half-a-dozen have drifted to workhouses, and fclio London County Council has found it cheaper to repatriate than to maintain them, so it is shipping .. them to Australia third-class at the ratepayers' expense.; There arc many others who shun- th 9 workhouses, preferring real hardship. These pin their hope of working passages to Australia, but the shipping depression has restricted this meaus of escape.
