PRAIRIE FARMERS

DISTRESS IN CANADA

APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT

MOTION IN PARLIAMENT

United TrcfH Association—By Electric Tele* graph—Copyright. (Received 21st April, 1 p.m.) OTTAWA, 20i.1i April A sub-amendment to the Address-in-Reply to the Speech from the Throne was moved by Mr. Robert Gardiner, leader .of the United Farmers of Alberta, in the House of Commons on Monday, urging that a Committee of the House investigate the.,,causes and extent of die present depression with a view to suggesting action to correct the situation. "Unless something turns up for the Western farmer in a short time, the morale of the people of the plains will, be absolutely gone," said Mr. Gardiner. There was no hope, he added, in the general agricultural situation, unless there was some modification of the farmers' debts. One- of the drawbacks of the present monetary system was that all Governments wanted to stabilise money at one level. Why this should' be, Mr. Gardiner said that he did not know. There was no reason why a Government should put its resources behind money any more than these resources should be applied to support manufacturing.
