BASE AT NAPIER
HAWKES BAY HOSPITAL
DECISION OF THE BOARD
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) \ NAPIER, 20th April. The Ha.wkes Bay Hospital tioard to-day affirmed the principle that the base hospital for the district, which embraces both Napier and Hastings, be re-established in Napier. The question of site, however, was deferred for consideration at a later date. The facilities at present in use at the old site will be continued on a temporary basis in the meantime. There had been some nervousness about returning to the old site on the hill, but this feeling was not now so pronounced, and the probability is that the institution will eventually be reestablished in its original position. The provision of general accommodation at Hastings, in addition to maternity cases (which are dealt with at the Memorial Hospital), was also discussed, and a committee is to go into the matter with the Department with a view to fitting the Memorial Hospital for both purposes, or formulating some other scheme. Hitherto Hastings has been without a local public hospital, except for maternity cases. Since the earthquake temporary accommodation has been provided in marquees on the racecourse, and this is being continued in the meantime.
