MUST HAVE MONEY

IMMIGRANTS TO CANADA

Further reports regarding the entry of immigrants into Canada have teen received by ■ the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon.. P. A. de la Perrelle) from the New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissioner, Toronto (Mr. J. W; Collins). From these reports it is learned that British subjects born or naturalised in the British Isles or the self-governing Dominions, viz., Newfoundland, Australia, New Zealand, or the Union of South Africa are admitted to Canada, provided they have sufficient means to maintain themselves until employment is secured. It is pointed out that, in view of the present general economic conditions ■which have resulted in a considerable amount of unemployment in Canada, as well as other countries, it is not the policy.of the Canadian Government to encourage immigration at this time. It is considered that a person desirous of being admitted" to Canada for permanent residence should have adequate funds for maintenance without working for a period of at least six months from the dato of Ms admission. NON-IMMIGRANT STATUS. • The report states that, persons . entering Canada under non-immigrant status will have, no more difficulty in securing entry than in the past. The Canadian Government does not require visitors to complete any forms prior to admission. The steamship companies furnish manifests of all passengers arriving "at Canadian ports, and it is believed to be the practice for them to furnish the information required on the manifests by filling in an interrogatory form made up by the steamship-com-panies at tho time of transportation. "All persons desirous5 of settling in Canada," says Mr. Collins, "should have funds for maintenance without working for a 'period of at least six months from the date of admission. Personally I may add that a warning be given to intended immigrants about stating-.that they are coming to Canada to take .up employment. If this is made 'known to the. Immigration Officer at the port it may cause trouble."
