MORE RAIN EXPECTED

Saturday was fair, mild, and pleasant over the greater part of the Dominion, with northerly breezes prevailing, a few isolated showers only occurring in the far north and south and on the West Coast. During Sunday a change set in over the North Island owing to the approach of a shallow depression towards northern New Zealand. The latter was centred north-west of Cape Maria on Sunday, and by this morning it was covering the North Island. The weather became thick and misty and rain quickly spread over the North Island, extending during Sunday night to places on the east coast of the South Island, Many heavy falls have occurred in the North, of which the following are some of the highest reported, namely:—Waitomo Caves. 431 points, Whangarei 311 points, Kuatangata 233 points, Cape Palliser 79 points, Poston 70 points. At 9 a.m. to-day northerly winds were still prevailing north of Kawhia and East Cape, but thence southwards southerlies were blowing, and generally the winds have freshened since last night. Auckland experienced a wet weekend, heavy rain falling on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday, with a fresh ndrth-cast wind. At Wellington it was fair and mild on Saturday. Sunday morning was warm and pleasant, though dull. Eain set in during the afternoon and developed into fairly heavy rain during the evening, with thick misty conditions. There was very little wind yesterday, but a southerly, sprang up during last night I and has since freshened. The rainfall at Wellington was 56 points. It was dull arid mild on Saturday -at Christchurch, and mild and sunny on Sunday, but the sky clouded in the evening. Dunedin had dull but fair and mild weather on both days, with very little wind. Light rain fell there early yesterday morning. The forecast is for moderate to strong southerlies south of New Plymouth and Napier, elsewhere southerlies at first, but backing gradually to southerlies and freshening. The weather will still be unsettled in most districts, with further rain, more especially over the North Island, where some heavy falls are still likely.
