LADY PAM SCORES

THE HAWKES BAY CUP

VERY BRILLIANT FILLY

X there remained any doubt about just how good a iilly Lady Pam is it was finally removed by the decisiveness -with which she settled her opponents in the Hawkes Bay Cup. In spite of the fact that she has been racing since the season opened, and has had no let-up, she has never looked in better condition than she did when she was paraded for the race, and her appearance was a real credit, to her trainer (G. Jones), who has had charge ot her preparation for the last six months. Her victory was very popular, arid was loudly acclaimed by an appreciative public. Straiffhtcoursc and Charinaline quickly raced to the front, but Lady Pam and Palm never let them get far away. My Own and White"Fang were at the tail of the field early, but they improved steadily along the back. Straightcourse led Charmaline into the ' straight, with . Lady Pam and Palm next, and My Own, White Fang, and Mount Shanuon nearest of the others. K. Reed momentarily cast his eye on tl\e rail for an opening, but as it was not there he did not wait, but brought the lilly down the outside of the leaders. He hail their measure at the distance, and came on full of running to win easily by a length from Charmaliue, with Palm another half length back third, well clear ot the fourth horse. Straightcourse. My Own. Mountain Heath, White Fang, and Speanniss were next. Lady Pam was favourite from the moment, "the machine opened, and at-the finalreckoning she was more than twice as' well backed as Straightcourse, the second1 choice.' Straightcourse was responsible for the solid pace set, but he was found wanting at the finish. Charmaline, who won a hack mile and a quarter at Waipukuran at Easter, went a surprisingly good race,' for she did not have a let-up at any part of the contest. She is a younger full-sister to a former useful performer in the southerner Malmsey, and is a year older half-sister to the last Great Easter winner Charmeuso. Palm also ran well the whole way, and he would probably have been second had the race been much further. My' Own and White Farig were beaten by the fast pace over the early stages, and their tasks from the half-mile were almost impossible, for, they had been forced to make their runs practically from- the seven furlongs. Spearmiss finished strongly and is an' improver.
