GOOD SEASON FOR BIRDS

The Government ranger at the Gouland Downs reserve, Nelson, has reported that the season just closing has been a very good one for birds, and that he has seen evidence of a large increase in the number of kiwis. "One pair of South Island wekas," ho states, "has reared three sets of young this season, and they have paired and are laying again in manuka close to my house. There is also a very noticeable increase in the silver-eye, or white-eye ia this district, and where in the past they could be seen in few numbers they are now in hundreds."
