WAGES CUTS

LABOUR PARTY'S PROMISE

A promise that, if given a majority in Parliament, a Labour Government would repeal tho wages cuts, was given by Mr. 11. E. Holland, M.P., Leader of the Labour Party, when speaking at tho Labour Conference to-day. "The 'cuts' have been closured through the House of Representatives by the combined votes of the United and Reform Parties, and no one will be optimistic enough to expect the Legislative Council to reject the Bill," ho said. "When the 'cuts' have come into full operation, they will reprcseut the heavy price which all the Public servants and all the wage workers will have to pay for the fact that some of the Public servants and some of the wage workers in substantial numbers cast their votes for tlio United and Reform Parties in 1928. Whether the 'cuts' will remain in operation after the end of the present year will depend solely upon tho Public servants and the wage workers generally. They have the matter in their own hands. A Labour Government coming into oflice will loso no time in repealing the wage-re-ducing legislation." A very largely-attended meeting of the Seamen's Union this morning, after hearing tho report of the conference called by the Alliance of Labour in regard to the wages cut, passed a unanimous resolution adopting the findings of the conference. A further resolution was passed protesting against the Government's Act to reduce wages.
