OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Though the Unemployment Board has consistently refrained from' interfering in any way in the arrangements that local bodies may make with regard to the rate of pay on relief work, and has repeatedly affirmed that policy in articles in the Press, statements continue to be made that the board is responsible for fixing the rate. The facts in this connection were further stated to-day by the Hon. S. G. Smith, who is chairman of the. board: — "In all relief works under the Unemployment Board's schemes," said Mr. Smith, "t.ho local bodies have been notified that the board has no power to refund wages in excess of the standard rate on Government relief: works, but the local bodies aro at liberty to pay whatever wages they may determine. Some local bodies have in the past paid more- than the standard rates, but in no case has the board refunded more. "Tho standard relief wages on Government relief works are now 9s per day for single men and 12s 6d per day for married men, in each case for a working day of eight hours, or, on an hourly basis, Is lid and Is 6jd per hour respectively.
