HOCKEY SEASON

OPENING EARLY IN MAY

NEW CLUB AT THORNDON

The Wellington Hockey . Association at its annual meeting last evening decided to .open the season on 2nd May. . The honorary secretary (Mr. It. H. Boys) said that ho'had applied to the Lower Hult Borough Council for. two grounds on the Hutt Recreation Ground and the Reserves Committee of the City 'Council for the .same grounds as last season. Ho had also made application for a ground on the level space formed by tho spoil from the new eastern traffic tunnel, and had asked the Reserves Committee to receive a deputation on the subject. He understood the same-grounds would be available, and that 18th' April would be the first day on -which they could be used. This would enable a general practice to be held before the opening of the season. It was decided that entries close at noon on 20th April. Mr.' G. S. Falconer was unanimously elected a life member of the association in recognition, of his valuable services to the game in various parts of- . the Dominion. The Marlborough Hockey Association wrote expressing the hope that Wellington players would be able to accept an invitation to pfay at. Blenheim during tho coming season. The Horowhenua Hockey Association asked for information as to whether it was a sub-association .of Wellington or Manawatu. As a sub-association Horowhenua was" debarred from certain competitions, and it was felt that it would be better to seek recognition as a separate body. The secretary said that at ,the annual meeting of the N.Z.H.A. Horowhentia was made a sub-association of Wellington, subject to satisfactory arrangements being-made with Manawatu on the question of territory. So far' as 'he knew nothing further had been done. He moved that Wellington support any application by Horowhenua for affiliation as a minor association. The motion was carried. It was decided to donate £2 2s each to the~ St. John Ambulance Association and the V.M.C.A. in' connection with earthquake relief. . A Petone remit to the effect that each club should have a representative on the Management Committee was withdrawn.. It was pointed out that the adoption of the remit would make the committee unwieldly if the number of clubs increased to any extent. . A letter was received from Mr. J. W. Kelly stating that a meeting was to be held that evening of players living in the-Wellington_ North district for th« purpose, of forming a new club to be called the Thorhdon Hockey Club. One of the matters for discussion was a proposal that a new club formed in Wadestown should join forces with Thorndon. It was stated - that the Thorndon. Club 'would' include' both ladies and-men, a number of whom would probably go over from other clubs, so that the total number of players in the association would not be greatly increased.'' . The matter was left to -the . incoming committee. '".■-',. ■'■ / ■ ■ ■ The following officers were elected: — President, Dr. H. 0. ITaulke; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. F. M. Luckie,. B. G-. H. Burn, W.
