"A LITTLE LATE"
WHALE OIL INDUSTRY
DOUBTFUL" FUTURE'
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This. Day,
Mr. A. B. Falla, ornithologist to the Mawson expedition, returned to-day. Ho expressed doubt about the futur-e of the .whalo oil industry, as there were in tho Antarctic Circle forty factory ships, with 220' chasers attached to them.
Seals, though still unprotected, were in large numbers, but tho exploitation of these animals had not yet been considered seriously as was the case in the Arctic.
Whaling ships were operating from New Zealand, Tasmania, and South Africa, but no Australian compauies were engaged. He thought that if Now' ZcaJanderii were proposing tho formation of whaling companies they were perhaps a little late.
Sir Douglas Mawson's ship, Discovery, had completed its programme, and was likely to return to England shortly. .'
