WELLINGTON'S EFFORT
• Gratification at the amount of money raised in Wellington for the relief of Jluwkcs Bay sufferers was expressed by tho Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) at a meeting of the Earthquake Belief Gommitteo to-day. ■ The position of the Mayor's, lund •was shown as follows: — Receipts—Remitted to the Mayor, £39,094 7s Id; "BveniagPosV'*.47W 16s sa: "Dominion," £1964 11s 10d; "N.Z. Truth," £50i 16s 2A; total, £45,872 11s 6d. . Payments and . Commitments.— Grants to visitors from- earthquake area,, £323; V.M.C.A., £25 los. sd; Women's Committee: Accounts paid £478 -3s 9d, balance of grant £71 16s 3d; Pood Committee, £276 13s Id;, St. John. Ambulance Association, £100; supplies to Hastings, £123 6s 3d; advertising and printing, £7 Us 6d; sundry accounts, £8 18s; paid to Public Account, £37,291 10s 4d; Union Bank, £4946 9s lid; outstanding promises, £2219 75—£45,872 11s 6a. : Tho total raised in Wellington, said Mr. Troup, was £84,159, particulars'of which, were:—
As far as disbursements were concerned, they could be kept ' under £1500, which he thought was very creditable. That amount would not justify anybody in laying a charge of extravagance against the committee, nor a charge that thoy had been niggardly. The Mayor stated that there was to be a Government audit of all earthquake subscription accounts. He heartily approved of such a course, which was calculated not only to roassuro the public, but to give- them confidence in tho future.
