Three intoxicated men in a motor* car completely blocked the road up t« Korokoro at a late hour last night. A man who offered to assist them received abuse, so he called the police,I.and' tho three men appeared in the Pctoha. Court this morning. John Cavell was charged with hay* ing been found in a stato of.intoxi» cation while in charge of a'-motbr-car. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant E. J. M'Kelvey said that at the .defendants' own request » doctor was called, and he cortified that they were under tho influence of liquor. But for running into a fence their car; would havo fallen over a 4.oft bank.; The defendants' explanation was that the car had got into difficulties ■ be* cause of the rough state of the road. Ho denied having offered abuse. \ Senior-Sergeant M'Kelvey: "Hay* you a driver's licence?" Defendant: "No." . Constable King said that the defendant's story last night was that ho had one, but had left it at home. The defendant was forthwith charged with driving Vithout a licence, and was fined £1. On the major charge he was fined £10, and ordered to pay £2 15a for expenses incurred by tho police in having his car shifted. Ho was debarred from holding a licence for twelve months. George Bruce Cavell, brother of the previous defendant, was also charged with having been intoxicated while in. charge of a motor-car. The seniorsergeant said that last night, both men1 had-claimed to be driving the car, and both had been charged. This morning they stated that only John had driven, and* ho wished to alter the charge against George Cavell to one of having been found drunk on the Korokdrfli road. To this Cavell .pleaded guilty, and was fined £1, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. , A similar charge was made against Oscar Lamberg, who was found in a drunken sleep in the back of the car. He also pleaded guilty, and was fined &1, in default 24 hours' imprisonment.
