D.I.C. DEFEAT KIRKCALDIE'S

Instituted a year ago, the second annual bowling match for the championship of Lambton quay between rinks representing the D.I.C. and Kirkcaldie and Staind was played on the Eastbourne bowling green on Saturday afternoon. The trophy is a leather medal in blue and white (D.1.0.) and purple and black (K. and" S.), and was won on the first occasion by the D.I.C. rink, the record being duly inscribed on it in gold lettering. It was displayed on the green while the match was in progress. The two rinks which contested Saturday's match were nearly all experienced bowlers, so that a keen contest was expected.

The rinks were as follow:—

D.I.C—A. E. Burge (Kelburn Club), T. B. Ferguson (Kelburn), W. Simm (Karori), and R. Ham (Victoria). Kirkcaldie and Staines.—E. J. Archibald (Thorndon), C. F. Smith (Kelburn), Cook (Eastbourne), and A. Claridge. (Hataitai). , _ _ _ Mr. W. Simm, manager ot the 1U.0., is one of the leading skips at Karon, and Mr. Ham figures similarly m the Victoria Club. Mr. Archibald is a wellKnown Thorndon lead, while Mr. Claridge has had some years' experience as skip in Hataitai and Newtown Clubs, and is a good bowler. o At the 'tea. adjournment K. and b. were leading 13-S, but on resuming play the D.I.C. came strongly and with 19 heads gone had drawn level, 20-all. h.. and S. made a bid for victory by scorin°- two on the twentieth, leaving JJ.I.U to make two to tie and three to win. Making a draw, an extra head was played, in which a good deal of timber was placed in front, K. and S. holding the shot with a bowl almost resting on the jack. With a nice drawing shot, Simm rested off the shot bowl to hold the shot with his bowl well protected by front bowls. It was almost an .impregnable position. Claridge made an attempt to draw, takins the right green,, but a yaid short, and D.I.C. won by a dingle point. Afternoon tea was provided by the Eastbourne Club, and hearty thanks weie accorded the committee of the club for entertaining the competitors and se^eral ladies who accompanied them.
