CRICKETERS' SOCIAL

A social was r.eld at the Basin Reserve pavilion on Saturday night to close the ■Mercantile Cricket League's 1030-31 season. The chairman of the League's Management Committee, Mr. A. C. Croll, presided, and in the course of his remarks mentioned tlie good .sportsmanship-that was a feature of tlie league matches. In addition to the representative games already played, .he said, league teams would visit Porinia and Wanganui during the Easter holidays. Mr. A. W. Gibson proposed tho toast of "The Wellington Mercantile Cricket League," and referred to the remarkable growth of the league since its inception in 1^22. Each week 38 teams, comprising over 400 players, were engaged in the competitions. Mr. G. B. Mann proposed the toast of "Tlie Wellington Cricket ■ Association," and Mr. R. Steele replied. Mr. J. Cimninghame proposed the toast of "The Wellington ami Mercantile League Umpires," and Mr. W. R. Bock replied on behalf of the Wellington Umpires' Association, and Mr.- F. Thompson for the Mercantile League umpires. The chairman presented the following cups and shields: Mercantile League Challenge Cup, A grade, Shipping Cricket Club; Arthur G. Cate Shield, B grade, "Mis Master's Voice" Cricket Club; S. Myers Cup. C grade, Hope Gibbons Cricket Club; R. L. Thompson Shield, D. grade, Telephone Exchange Cricket Club; D grade Knockout Competition Club, Labour Department Cricket Club. Mementos to winners of last season's championships: Customs (A grade), Sargootls (B grade), State Fire Insurance (C grade). . . During the evening musical and elocutionary items were given by Messrs. H. K. Wilson, A. Pi-ingle, Farquharson, H. Mitchell,' and the Roseneath Mercantile .Club's orchestra (Messrs. Hancock, Read, and Dawson).
