NEW TRACK OPENED
SATURDAY'S MEETING
The weather was not particularly propitious for the opening of the new banked cycling track at the Winter Showgrounds on Saturday, and, no doubt, this had its effect on the attendance. Described as the Wellington Provincial cycling championshii - programme of events was run off by the Wellington Centre, New Zealand Union of Cyclists, in conjunction \ with the Winter Show Association. There I were good fields for most of the events, and some very 'promising performances were registered by B grade and junior riders. Indeed the form shown by the younger riders was the feature of a not very thrilling meeting. L. Roberts rode well during the afternoon, winning the half-mile and' mile time trial championships, and the flying lap. He was also second to J. Foote in the three-mile championship. E. Ulmer took all the B grade events, and a- youngster, G. Pennington, captured the crowd by his game efforts. He. won (mainly through the generosity-of W. Bray) the two mile miss-and-out race, and concluded the afternoon by taking the five-mile handicap . from the 550 yd mark. It w<ts a popular victory.
