CONSERVATIVE WINS
(Hriiisli OOldal Wireless.) (Received 28lh March, 1.1. a.m.) RUGBY, 27th March. The by-election at Sunderland caused by llib death of the Labour member, Mr. Alfred Smith, resulted:— Luke Thompson (C.) .... 30,497 J. T. Brownlie (Lab.) .... 30.075 Dr. Belly Morgan (L.) .. 15,020 Conservative gain. The other member for Sunderland, which is a two-member constituency, is Dr. Marion Phillips (Lab.). The figures at the General Election were: Dr. Marion Phillips (Lab.), 31,794; Alfred Smith (Lab.), 31,085; Sir Walter Raine (C.), 29,180; Luke Thompson (C), 28,937; Dr. Betty Morgan (L.), 21,300; Sir John Batt (L.), 21,142. Sir Walter Raine and Mr. Thompson were both the members in the previous Parliament.
