DICKENS SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY

An enjoyable evening was spent by the Dickens-Shakespeare Society on Monday. The president, Mr. Clement May, gave a short discourse in which he compared the old school of Shakespearian actors with the new school brought into being by Sir Henry Irving's more natural interpretation; this seemed to have been based on Shakespeare's own idea as voiced by Hamlet in his instructions to the players. An elocutionary and musical programme was presented by Miss Zena Jupp. Miss Kyra Jupp and Miss Christina Conlon opened with a pianoforte duet, "Merry Wives of Windsor," and afterwards played "Henry VIII. Dances," earning great applause._ A clever recitation of "Constance" (King John) by Mrs. C. Ross was greatly enjoyed. Miss Herbert sang "I Come to Claim My Love," and "Provence," and responded to encores. Mr. Cedric Muir _ recited "Anthony's Oration." Miss Phyllis Martin sang "Orpheus with His Lute," and later "Shall He Upbraid," and responded to encores. Miss Joan Maunder gave a recitation of "Desdemona" ("Othello"). A Dickensian reading, "Bob Sawyer's Supper Party" ("Pickwick Papers"), by Miss Zena jupp, Mr. Kennedy, Mr. R. W. Yardley, Mr. L. Sceates, Mr. C. Muir, and Mr. G. O'Connor, was enthusiastically received, Miss Jupp being most realistic in the part of Mrs. Raddle. The closing item, "Bob Cratchit and Scrooge" ("Christmas Carols"), given by Mr. Errol Muir and Mr. H. Aitken, was cleverly rendered.
