la November of last yeta Arnold Vaughan Sutton, alias George Stamen, came from. Auckland to Wellington, stopping at a number of towns en route.' His transactions with valuelesi cheques led to his appearance in the Magistrate's 'Court yesterday on thirteen charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences, and one charge of obtaining credit to the value of £1 Os 6d by fraud. Button admitted all the charges. Sub-Inspector Ward told Mr. E. Page, S.M., that Sutton had been discharged from prison in September of last year after serving three years for false pretences. Por five or six weeks ho worked near Te Aroha, >and after issuing a valueless cheque there he went to Auckland, where he issued more valueless cheques. Prom Auckland he came to Wellington via a number of towns, in all of which he issued more cheques. His general practice was to go into a shop, buy an article, and tender a cheque, receiving change. In this way he had obtained goods and money to the value of £48 18s. When the accused reached Wellington he signed on an oil tanker' and went to America, but when the ship returned last week he surrendered himself to tho police on the present charges. The accused had six previous convictions, extending over several yoars for- similar offences. Prom the dock, Sutton said that after he came out of- prison ho Expected a reconciliation with his wife, but on the day he was discharged he was served with divorce "papers. That .started him off on a drinking bout. When on the oil tanker he.could have escaped into America, but did not do so, and had surrendered himself when he returned. ."AH I can do,"" he concluded, "is) to throw myself on the meroy of the Court, and I ask your Worship to' please grant, a hard labour sentence." Mr. Pago agreed, to the last request, sentencing the accused to twelve months' hard labour on one charge and ordering him to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months on the others.
