THE CLOSURE
DRAMATIC STEP
TO STOP OBSTRUCTION
"STONEWALL" INTERRUPTED
MR. FORBES'S INTENTIONS
When the Committee stage on the Finance Bill was resumed in the House of Representatives this afternoon the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) moved to report progress, with leave to sit again. His reason for doing that was for the purpose of enabling the earthquake legislation to be introduced. The Bill was of 70 clauses, and it was only reasonable that it should be circulated. Mr. Forbes also said he wanted to Lake the House into his confidence in reference to an amendment of the Standing Orders, an amendment that would enable the business of Parliament to be carried on. "Don't hold it up, don't hold it up," cried Reform members when Mr. Barnard rose to thank the Prime Minister for his statement. Progress was reported at 2.40 p.m. Seen after the House rose, Mr. Forbes intimated that at 7.30 p.m. the Government would place proposals before the House for an amendment of the Standing Orders to provide for the introduction of the closure.
