POST OF QUARTERMASTER
MANY APPLICATIONS
NEW YOEK, 251h March. • While others may scoff at the Polar submarine expedition as being "foolhardy," Sir Hubert Willuns to-day pointed to 60 applications received for tho quartermaster's post, made vacant by the death of Quartermaster Willard Grimmer, who was lost overboard when the -vessel was entering New York Harbour on Saturday last. Tho oxplorer said: "The fact that 50 or 60 experienced submarine men are not only willing but anxious to make the adventure shows they have some faith that we will reach the North Pole and return successfully on our trip under the ice." No successor to Grimmer has yot boon chosen. Tho applicants are being subjected to tho most severe tests of physique, personality, and experience. Tho Nautilus will not undergo hor diving trinl, us first planned, but will proceed to Yonkers, whero her three ico drills, on which fiho will depend to gain the surface under tho ice, will be tested. ___
