IMPROVING WEATHER

BUT STILL COLD

While barometric pressure is gradually vising over the greater part o£ the Dominion, it has remained fairly low in northern districts owing to the fact that there is a shallow cyclone centred north-east of. the Bay of Plenty. This disturber of peaceful autumn weather has caused strong and squally southerly winds to prevail from Cook Strait northward, together with cold and showery weather. in nearly all districts. In Westland, on the contrary, the weather has been fair to fine. This morning, however, saw a general improvement over the South Island with the exception of the vicinity of IToveaux Strait. Unsettled weather prevailed in Auckland yesterday, a fresh south-west wind bringing occasional showers. A cold southeasterly blew in Wellington. The day was cloudy and misty rain, amounting to nine points, fell during the morning. Both Ohristchurch and Dunedin experienced a celd and dull day, with intermittant rain, fivo points falling in Cliristchurch. The forecast issued at noon to-day indicates that tho fresh to strong southerly winds in and north of Cook Strait may bo expected to moderate gradually. Showers are likely in the north and on the Bast Coast of the North Island, as well as in the far south. Somewhat squally and changeable weather, with cold temperatures, should give place to fair to cloudy conditions, and during the week-end it is anticipated that the weather will materially improve. ■
