A well-known but rather timid author was walking across the Place de l'Opera with his wife, and was brave enough to refuse to accede to some request which she had made to him. She pleaded and then threatened, and, finding neither or any avail, suddenly lay down upon the roadway, and went into a lit with such success'that the husband was immediately surrounded by indignant onlookers and upbraided for (lie brutality which must have been the cause of his wife getting into such a state. Words led to blows, and eventually the lady had quickly to recover in order to protect him Irom being severely handled.
