A series of mysterious explosions heard all over Lower Hutt and as far afield asTaita at 4 a.m. to-day woke many residents, some oC whom were seriously perturbed, having visions or murder being done or safes blown open. A resident on the McJling Hill seriously considered culling the police, fearing a tragedy had occurred, while the policemen on' night duly rushed from the Police Station in a vain, endeavour to trace the cause. When investigated this morning the explosions wcro traced to a motor-lorry back-firing while travelling along the. main road.
