NELSON NEWS

OLD LANDMARK GOES

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

NELSON, 25th March,

An old landmark in "Waiinea street, the building where "The Colonist" was published for many years, is being demolished. Erected ia about the year 1857, it was probably one of the oldest wooden buildings in the district.

H.M.S, Diomede arrived at the outer anchorage soon after 11 o'clock this morning on an official visit to the city.

Early this morning a five-seater touring car was destroyed by fire'on Spooner's Range. It was the property of Mr. Jack Shaw, and was being driven by Mr. H. Curtis, who had borrowed it. It left the road in a thick fog and was brought to rest down a bank. As the vehicle was on a slope and the benzine supply was low, the engine would not Btart, and so Mr. Curtis walked on to Belgroye to procure benzine, leaving his companion, Mr. C. Orton, to look after the car. On arriving at Belgrove Mr. Curtis could not arouse a petrol pump owner, and so tramped on to Foxhill, where he secured threo gallons. After a long carry he got back to the car and put the benzine into the tank, some being used to prime the carburettor to facilitate easy starting. Mr. Curtis was warming up the engine before driving- back to the roadway when it burst into flames. The two men walked on to the Belgrove Hotel, arriving at 5 a.m., and returned to Nelson this morning. From the time the ear ran off the road until the fire no traffic of any description passed over the hill.
