L Presentation. < Miss Dorothy Mills, who has been cconipanist for fourteen, years to the Vellington Choral Union, will loavo v Saturday by the Eangitata for a rip to England and the Continent. Muv members of tlic society, in reeogitiun of her services, presented Miss tills on Tuesday evening with a traveling nig and cushion, and a cheque. Ir. J. W. Chartres, chairman, made lie presentation, and Mr. John Bishop poke oil behalf of the members. Miss tills expects to return to New Zealand bout next December, •arty at Heretaunga. Two trophies, brought from Scotland ccently by Mrs. Warwick Gregory, rerc played for yesterday at Herotauiga, and wore won by Miss Enid Bell ,nd Miss Penelope. Bl'uudcl]. After tho natch, Mrs. Gregory entertained the layers and other guests to tea at tho ;olf house. A committee of ladies organised a very successful concert at tho Pioneer Club last evening in.aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund. The rooms wore artistically decorated with bowls of blue and pink hydrangeas and golden marigolds. A varied musical programme was provided by the following: Mrs. TowJilcy, Miss Nornh Gray, Miss Fenion, Mrs. K. Goodson, Miss Ava S.ymons, Mrs. Ginn, Miss Gladys Watkins, Miss 13. Greig, Mrs. Bamsay, Mr. Samuel Duncan, and the Waiata Quartet. A dialogue from "As You Like It," was given by Misses Joyce Diunison and Hilary Henderson, and a. sketch by Miss Joyco Dinnison. A dance by Miss Joan Bccro completed tho very excellent programme. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Giun and Mr. Gordon Short. The committeo who organised the concert comprised Mrs. Ginn, Mrs. C. Woston, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Lundius, Misses 11. Gardner, D. Isaacs, F. Penney, B. Putnam, and E. Fair (secretary)'. At the conclusion of tho programme, Miss Kane (president of tho club) thanked all who had assisted with items and otherwise, and also those who attended. A box of sweets was raffled; by Miss F. Penney, and won by Miss Page. Croquet Competition. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent on the Hataitai Municipal Croquet Club greens recently, when patients from tho Eed Cross Hostel, Hobson street, wore entertained by members of tho club. Weather conditions were ideal, and during the afternoon various competitions were held, into which the visitors and members entered wholeheartedly. A delicious afternoon tea was served in. the club pavilion. Mrs. I'.riolilinp- (president) welcomed fho visfturs on behalf of the Hub. The competitions wore evenly contested, the winners being, fur Uio visitors: Mr. Clark (French), and Mr. Denvars .(peg). 'Scott (break). Prizes were kindly donated by members of the club. A Retirement. -Much interest is attached to the retirement of Miss Bicknoll from the position of Director of Nursing in New Zealand, which she has held since the retirement of Miss Maclean, If.lv.C, in 11)23. Miss Bickncll has served twentylive years in the Department of Hospitals and Health,'and is the first New Zealand-trained nurse to hold the office of head of the Nursing Service, and also that of matron-in-chiof of the Army Nursing Service under the Defence Department. Miss Bicknell «uiw service during the late war, having gone away from the Dominion as matron of the hospital ship Maheuo. Many changes have been mado during the past few years, and for some of these Miss Bicknell was partly responsible, while others have had her full approval and sympathy. But during her last year of office the alteration which allows nurses to be trained in private hospitals was introduced to licl- great regret, and she was supported in her objections by practically all members of the nursing profession. It biis been decided to offer Miss Bicknell a suitable farewell to take place at St. Helen's Hospital, when the nurses of tho Health Department will niako presentations to her. Miss Bagley, matron of St. Helen's, hopes to see all the nurses present to express tho good feeling which exists, and to wish . Miss Bicknell many good things for the future. League of Mothers. The annual meeting of the Island liay-Berhamporc ' branch of the League of Mothers was held this week, a large assemblage of mothers being present. Mrs. Vickery presided. Mrs. Connor and Miss Marshall sang a duet, and Miss Mann gave a solo, the music being much appreciated. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet were read and passed. Keports wore given of tho Cradle 8011, and of the Magazine Club, and the president spoke of tho Christmas cheer provided at the Hospital, and of the later visit-ing of Napier patients at tho institution. A vote of condolence was passed to all who had suffered loss of friends and property during the recent disastrous earthquake. Miss Ilillon and Miss Boutell then contributed items and the performers woro all heartily thanked for the pleasure they had given. Tea was handed round, and the election of officers for tho year followed, tho results being as follow: — President, Mrs. Hindmarsb; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Vickery, Whitelaw, and Mason; lion, secretary and treasurer, Miss Craig; committee, Mesdames Craig, Connor, Ewen, Gledhill, Duncan, Leslie, and Mawson. "A Mystery Party." The happy time spent by some fifty girls at a "Mystery' 1 party, at the Y.AV.C.A., Boulcott street, on Tuesday night, augurs well for tho cheerful and interesting hours tho girls will be spending at tho Y.AV.C.A. this winter. Tho programme was in the hands of Miss Leila Bridgman, National Girls' Work Secretary, and Miss Dorothy Ferguson, the nowly-appointed Girls' Work Secretary for the Wellington Association. Games and "mystery items" comprised most of the programme. Just boforo supper Miss Bridgman told the girls of the- Y.W.C.A. clubs and classes and the Gir1 Citizen movement of New ■ Zealand, and as a result a good enrolment for the clubs was secured. Mothers' Union. St. Thomas's branch of the Mothers' Union held its first meeting of the year recently. Mrs. Sprott and Mrs. Rudolph Sprott were among those present. The latter gave a most interesting address about her life and work in Melanesia, which was greatly appreciated by the members present. This branch of tho Mothers' Union has just dispatched a case of medical requirements and other necessaries for the hospital at Faiabu, in Melanesia.An Overseas Visitor. The Kelburn Croquet Club was favoured recently with a visit from Lady AVemyss, who, with her husband, Sir Francis Colchester-Wenvyss, has spent over three months touring in the Dominion. Although weather conditions were not very satisfactory for good play, Lady AVemyss spent, a -pleasant afternoon with the members uf thu club. Mrs. Austin,, president, find Mrs. Earlc Mackenzie, secretary of the Wellington Croquet Association, were also guests of the club. Nursing Division. Tho AVellington South Nursing Division met recently, when tho chief business was the presentation of certificates to tho first cadet division established in AVellington, and attached to the AVellington South Division. Mrs. Preston (president), who presided, expressed her pleasure at the formation of tho division and congratulated them on their officers, Dr. Ada Platts-Mills (divisional surgeon)' and Miss Gaby (superintendent). Dr. D. X Platts-Mills (lady district superintendent) addressed the members on the work of the Order of St. John, and tho "Cod© of ChivalryV was read by the divisional surgeon, the names being called by the superintendent, and the cadets individually responding. The new division was addressed by Mr. F. AY. Ward (acting commissioner), Mr. Button (corps superintendent), a.nd Dr. Line (corps surgeon). The early formation of a cadet division at Brooklyn was announced, several intending members being present. Mrs. Tythe-Brown was cordially welcomed as a member oJ tho AVellington South Division. Squad work and roller bandaging were practised under tho supervision of Mrs. Bctts. A largo number of visitors were present, including parents and friends of the cadets. Among the visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Armour, Mr. and Mrs. Miles, Mr. and Mrs. Scott, Misses Holm, Miss Bennett, IJ.K.C, Mr. T. Mills, Misses Tanner, Townseud, Cook, Elliott, Stewart. Arrangements were mado for assisting on Freo Ambulaueo "Street Day" on Friday next, and for duty at the General Hospital in April. "Bon Voyage." A very pleasant party was given at the Lyceum Club last evening for Miss Alice Gray, who loaves shortly for an extended tour of Great Britain, the

Continent, and Egypt. A pleasing programme (urniMgi'd by Mrs. kyon) occupied tho first half of the evening, the singers being Miss Cliote, L.A.E., Miss Mavis Castle, Miss Ailsa Dillon, L.T.C.L., and Dr. .Smyth. The accompaniments were played by Miss Samson, Mr. It. Castle, Miss Mavis .Dillon, L.A.8., IYT.C.L.., and Mrs. Tilliard Natusch. Miss Essie Gill 'recited a monologue, "Dreaming John" (Drinkwater), and a pianoforte solo was played by Miss Jean "Watts. Mrs. J. J. Clark, who received the guests, spoke of the many ways in which Miss Gray had helped the club's interests, and in wishing her "bou voyage," presented her (on behalf of the members) with y, hand-made suede travelling cushion, the work of Miss Barbara Clark.- Miss Gray suitably responded. After supper tho singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought tho evening to a close.
