_ -«. ■ ■ OLD LNN DEMOLISHED Days when crowds, regarded, public executions as a pleasant thrill aro. recalled hy the demolition of the ■ King of Denmark, a public house in the Old Bailey, London,, says the "Sunday News." -n This • ancient inn, opposite the Oeatral Criminal Court, where the old Newgate Prison once stood, is to bo pulled down and modernised. Many years ago, when the house was known as the "Magpie and Stump," its front windows were, in great demand as grandstands for the public executions, which took placo on. temporary scaffolds outside the prison. High prices were paid for seats. . . The "Magpie and Stump" figured an "Tho Ingoldsby .Legends," .where it is recorded that Lord Tomnoddy hired the whole first floor and. invited his friends to witness a public hanging, but the parly got so drunk that they slept while the execution took place. The inn ficured in. the last public execution in, England on 28th May, 1868, when Michael Barrett, a Fenian, was hanged for attempting to blow up old Clcrkonwoll Prison.
