HAURAKI'S MISHAP
' PILOT RESPONSIBLE (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The inquiry into the grounding of the motor-ship Hauraki at New Plymouth on 26th February ; was continued to-day. Counsel for tho master called evidence showing tllat it was customary for a master to volunteer information to the pilot that the ship was slow or otherwise on the helm, and also as to her draught, but not whether tho ship was single or twin screw. The master usually took tho pilot's word on matters affecting the depth of water. After ' tho adjournment, tho Court said that the pilot got 'certain information on boarding the ship, and such other information as ho required was available. It was his duty to ask for it. But he had not asked, and therefore the responsibility for the accident must bo with the pilot.
The costs amounted to £52, and tho Court ordered■ tho pilot to pay £,25 only, being of opinion that it was a very small deviation from duty on the pilot's part. The Court added that the ground to tho east of Newton lung wharf ought to be swept.
