CHILDREN RESCUED

FIRE AT EASTBOURNE

Two children were rescued from a miming house at the corner of Makara and Kua streets, Eastbourne, early this iuorning, with only the night clothing they were wearing. The building was totally destroyed.

Mr. Alan Cameron, who occupied the house, was sleeping in a room at the back and was awakened by the smell of smoke at about 2.30 a.m. When he got up he found the kitchen and the passage way blazing strongly. Rushing to the front he rescued the children.

When the Eastbourne Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived on' the scene the flames had a strong hold, and although several water tanks in the vicinity were drained by an electric pump, nothing was saved.

The house, which -was built of wood, contained four room?, nnd was owned by Mrs. Maria Mazzola. It w.'is insured for £250 with (ho British Insurance Company, and Iho contents for £1.50 with the Atlas Company.

While engaged in fighting the flames, "W. \j. Com He, a member of the brigade, fell and fractured his right ankle. Hi; was la ken. to the Hospital by the City Ambulance.
