WHEAT PROBLEM

SIMPLE BIBLICAL REMEDY

THE VATICAN VIEW

(Received 26th March, 2 p.m.)

VATICAN CITY, 25th March.

The "Osservatore Romano," on the eve of the International Wheat Conference, advises the simple Biblical remedy, following Joseph's example of garnering the fat years and storing for sale in the lean. It suggests that the price could thus be stabilised by the use of only a small proportion of the world's gold resources. Estimating the world surplus at 420 million bushels, purchasable at 2s 9d a bushel, it says that this would only involve an expenditure of 2J per cent, of the gold reserves. "While gold has only relative value," tho paper adds, " grain has the most absolute value in the world."
