SIR GEORGE SALTMARSH
DEATH A SEVERE LOSS
A telegram notifying the death in the English railway disaster on Monday of Sir George Saltmarsh has been received by the Government,' through the Governor-General, from the Secretary of State for Dominion. Affairs.
"I feel sure," said the Secretary of State, "that His Majesty's Governments in the Commonwealth, and New Zealand will join with His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom in deploring the death in such tragic circumstances of one who, though ho had been associated with the British Phosphate Commission for a comparatively short time, had already performed most useful service. The loss of Sir George iSaltmarsh is greater in that he had only just returned to London after a successful visit -to Australia and New Zealand from which we had confidently anticipated, that both the Commission and the three Governments would derive very valuable results."
The following reply has been dispatched by His Excellency:— "His. Majesty's Government in New Zealand with whom I associate myself, have learned with profound regret of death by accident of Sir George Saltmarsh and'would bo grateful if you would convey to his relatives their deepest sympathy. Ministers were greatly impressed during Ms recent visit to New Zealand not only by his high and attractive personal qualities but also by the marked ability which he displayed in dealing with the object of his mission, and they feel, that by his death the Phosphate Commission and the Governments represented have suffered a severe loss."
