Sub-Inspector Ward said that ths offence occurred at Hamilton, and from, there the accused drove to the Taranaki district, spending some time at Feilding. They were arrested in the early, hours of the morning of the 18th near Paekakariki by detectives who were ia the vicinity. While the accused had the car they damaged it to the extent of £6 10s, and it would cost £,8 to rail it back to Hamilton.

M'Combie told the Magistrate that he had been out of work since the middle of January. He had been to Napier looking for work, but was unable to get any. "If your Worship would grant me probation you would have no reason to regret it," he said. "I have had a stainless character in the past, and I will have one in the future."

White said he had been out of work, for three months, and, like M'Combi©, had been tramping around the North Island looking for something to do.

"I think they are worth a chance. They both rather favourably inj» pressed me," said the Probation Officer (Mr. T. P. Mills).
