WINTER SHOW
MAKING GROUNDS PAY
THE INITIAL MEETING
The executive of the Wellington Show Association met last night, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood presiding.
The position," said the chairman, meant expenditure to secure returns, but care was necessary, and this had been duly exercised. There was no encroachment on any funds likely to be required for interest for debenture holders.
The finance committee reported that the three associations controlling football in Wellington had been written to inviting tenders for tho use of the ground. .The chairman said it was necessary to consider the debenture holders. Doubtless sports' bodies would welcome the use of the grounds, and the highest offer would be accepted. There was reason to believe that the use of the grounds this initial season would be considerable. The grounds were big enough for Association football. Some definite policy would be decided upon in regard to one of the sports bodies by the finance committee. On the recommendation of the Grounds Committee it was decided that the first meeting of the top ground be held on Saturday, when the "Wellington amateur cycling championships will be run under the Cyclists' Union, the Show Association to meet expenses, and take the whole- of the gate. . Estimated expenses were & 83, including £25 in advertising and £50 in prize money, and the offer of the Cyclists' Union to supply all officials and run the meeting was accepted. The offer of the Cyclists' Union to run a meeting of amateur cycling championships on the ground at Easter under the same terms and conditions was accepted, the ground to bo officially opened on this occasion.'
It was decided to reduce the consequential loss policy ft>r £10,00!) to £6000, provided that the ■ conditions were satisfactory to the chairman, treasurer, ana manager.
It was statea that the Manufacturers' Association having been consulted, the Finance Committee recommended the dates of the show as 27th August to 12th September, which would follow the Christchurch Show, and not conflict with any others. The recommendation was adopted. A statement by the Finance Committee, showing expenditure on the top ground as £3909 7s 9d, not including £499 relief wages paid out and to be refunded, was adopted. It was stated that £5360 of the second issue of debentures had been subscribed, and £3771 cash had been paid on account. Debentures amounting to £790 applied for had been allotted. In a' discussion on attractions for the forthcoming show, Mr. W. S. Wilson suggested that in view of the extent and progress of the fruit industry in Nelson, the fruitgrowers' representatives • should be approached to make a full display of the resources of the district. The suggestion was approved. ,
