W.C.T.U. CONVENTION
WEEK-END PROCEEDINGS
Miss Peach, president of the Bournemouth Union, England (who is at present touring the Dominion) was a visitor during the sitting of tho W.C.T.U. Convention at Nelson, and addressed the members, taking for. her subject -"Eoadmaking." She also brought greetings from tho English Union.
Over 200 gathered at a garden party given to the Convention at Wakefield. The visitors were taken out by motorcars, and the beautiful weather prevail-; ing added to the pleasure of the outing. A special convention service was held at the Methodist Church on Sunday, and Convention resumed its sitting on Monday. Mrs. Perynian (editor of tho "White Eibbou") presented her report, which showed a very satisfactory balance. She was' heartily thanked for her work in this respect, and unanimously reelected. Miss M'Lay, Young People's Organiser, gave an interesting report of her work. Tho Dominion superintendents of literature stated that all literature was now centralised at tho headquarters in Wellington. The various banners were presented to the successful competitors as follows: Greatest increase of members, Palmerston North; banner for percentage, Seddon, Marlborough; "V" banner, for increased members, Inglewood; Moore bauner, Upper Waima. A packed house greeted the "V" demonstration, .which was most enjoyable, a special display, "The White Court," being much admired.
Resolutions passed included the following:—"That the regulation relating to smoking in non-smoking carriages on the New Zealand railways be moro strictly enforced; that tho age of marriage for minors be raised to 1,6 years, as now exists in British law; that provision be made whereby a'deserted wife may receive tho family allowance without the signature of the husband being necessary." Superintendents gave their reports of prison and reformatory work, refreshment booths, notable days, moral hygiene, work among seamen. The membership report showed: Seniors, C5Ol members; "V's," 1016; Maori, 354; Nuie Island, 905—Total, 8476. . Loyal Temperance Legion reported 1100 mombors; Band of Hope, 2407; and "Cradle Eoll," 8461.
