BLAZE OF JEWELS

A MAHARAJAH ENTERTAINS

Tbo Oonnaught Kooms, London, were the scene of an extraordinarily picturesque banquet recently, when the Maharajah of Alwar entertained some two hundred guests to celebrate the 27th anniversary of hia reign. All the Maharajah's colleagues at the Indian Eou J Table Conference wero present, and the exotic robes of the visitors from Iho East presented an outstanding contrast to the sombre and formal attire oi: tho Western, guests (states an English writer). The Maharajah himself; was a spectacular figure in his pale mauve robe, with its elaborate gold facings. He

'■wore a picturesque niauvc hat in tho shape of au old Hindu crown, in front of which blazed a groat star of diamonds, rubies; and emeralds. Bound his irieek was a magnificent chain of rubies, edged with diamonds, glittering gems that wero worth moro than the proverbial king's ransom. He escorted Miss Ishbel Mac Donald into the banqueting hall to tho.dramatic accompaniment of a fanfare of trumpets, and he was followed by tho Prime Minister, Mr. Earnsay Mac Donald, and Lady Londonderry. The gorgeous colours of tho magnificent robes worn by the almond-eyed Eastern women and tho elaborate turbans of tho Sikhs and the Hindus made a colourful pageantry as the guests took thoir places at the small, round tables, and wero mingled fantastically with the equisite Paris gowns and tho black tail coats of the English guests.
