TWELVE MONTHS

P. RIDDLE'S TROUBLE

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, 20th March.

The sensation of the season to date is the twelve months' disqualification imposed yesterday by the A.J.C. stipendiary stewards on the connections of the two-year-old Prince Elmo for improper practices at the Canterbury Park Meeting on Wednesday. The owner, Mr. R. Bycrs, is better known amongst trotting people hero, while the trainer, P. Riddle, made his name amongst the trotters too, and did particularly well in Now Zealand. A. Stanton, the rider, is an ex-pony jockey, who since changing over has already served two months' suspension for careless riding. In the Canterbur3 r race, Town Topic, Prince Elmo, and Tintern dominated a very weak field and were out clear all the way. ■ Prince Elmo wont very wide at the turn, at which point was posted one of the stipendiary - stewards. In evidence he stated that he heard Stanton call out something to W. Cook, the rider of the winner, Town- Topic. It is understood that Stanton's remarks were very damaging to the case- for the defence.

Town Topic won at the finish from the fast-finishing Prince Elmo. Town Topic was solid in. the betting market, and Prince Elmo drifted.

An appeal has been lodged. Riddle, who has a No. 1 licence, has one of the biggest teams at Randwick, mostly young horses. His owners'are prominent racing men, including Messrs. Percy and Robert Miller.' Prince Elmo, the horse- who was the instrument, is a ■useful colt by Treclare from Arlington Maid.
