GARDENER'S FAILURE

MEETING OF CREDITORS

A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of E. Hai Yen, a Chinese ex-mar-ket gardener, at Otaki and Paraparaumu, was_ held to-day at the office of the Official Assignee, Mr. S. Tansley. The statement of accounts Bhowed:— Amount owing to unsecured creditors, £937 12s 2d; assets, nil. The principal creditors were: Market Gardeners, Ltd., £302; L. King, £175; Truelight and Co., Otaki, £142; Yee Chong Wing and Co., £121.

In his sworn statement the bankrupt said that he took over a market garden in Otaki from June, 1922, to August, 1927. Most of that time he was in Wellington as he had a fruit shop in Willis street. He was not successful with the market garden. In February, 1924, a fire broke out in the fruit shop. The insurance did not cover the loss. In June, 1923, he opened another shop in Willis street. A fire occurred next door, and spread to his premises. He lost money by that fire. He met with an accident, broke his thigh, and was in hospital for three months. He was unable to get work for over a year. Subsequently, he took up a market garden at Paraparaumu, but in two years gave it up as he was in arrears of rent. In February, 1029, his wife opened a Bhop _in Parish street, and he had been assisting her from that time. As there was not sufficient trade, his wife did not require his assistance. He was still out of employment. Mr. W. Brown appeared for bankrupt, Mr. J. Mcltzer for Truelight and Co., and Mr. W. H. Earnshaw. for Market Gardeners, Ltd. The bankupt wa« questioned at length in regard to his husiness dealings. He said Vie could not nl present make any offer to liis ere-!■;■•!..
