EVANS DEFEATS OGG

A competitor at a sports meeting: at Marton on Friday evening was W. O;rf!, of the Olympic Club, AVellington. lie took part "in a special invitation SSO j yards race with D. Divans, of Taihape, New Zealand 440 yards and SSO yards champion. Evans led throughout and won. by about two yards. The time was slow—2rain 7 l-ssee—but had the other competitors who were to have been in the race taken part, no doubt, with the I assistance of the pacemaking, Evans and Ogg would have done better. Ogg also competed in a 44.0 yards handicap, and from the ten yards mark made no race of the event, running through the field to win by live yards in 50 4-ssec. After the Taihape meeting last Wednesday at which he was defeated by the American, Kiifiis Kiser, in both the 441) yards and one 7nile events, Evans hud do excuses to make. "Kiser beat me by better tactics," said Evans. The trouble was that when he passed Kiscr in tlic 440 yards race he set out to beat^ the leader, too. Whereas ho was foolishly trying to beat the field, Kiser was content to beat him. Kiser van a better ra.ee. than lie did, but ho felt that if ho had followed the sajne tactics as Kiser he would have maintained his lead and defeated the American. In the mile Kiser established too big a lead from Evans in (lie first two laps. Kvanw sprinted half way through the last hip, but wus unable to make up the lost ground. Tile sense of hearing of tortoises is not very strong, but they are frightened l\v noise, and can distinguish, the-sounds of their, .tinjt,. piping "-voices.
