THE KING'S PRIZE

M'IVER'S GOOD LEAD

FINAL THIS AFTERNOON

LONa EANGE MATCHES

(By "The Post's" Special Reporter.) TEENTHAM, This Day. If Trentham was at its worst yesterday, it.was certainly at its best to-day when competitors attending the National Bifle Association's meeting went dow,n on to the mounds at 8 a.m. for tho Otago Match (800 yards and 900 yards), the last of tho qualifying Belt matches. Yesterday's heavy north-wes-ter and rain had given place to almost a/dead .calm,. ( and though dull at first tho weather improved, bright sunshine dispelling the gloom.■ ,- ■ When the King's forty shoot off for tho rifle championship at 3 p.m. to-day W. M'lver, tho prominent Petono marksman, will have a lead of 4 points from E. A. Ballinger, his clubmate. Ballinger put up a very fine performance this morning when he scored 100, registering possibles at each range, thereby moving up from fifth to second placp among the leaders. C. J. Nix (Featherston), who was one point bohind M'lver, failed to hold his position, shooting a 49 and, a 45. W. : N. Mascficld (Marlborough) shot a 49 at SOO yards, but at 900 yards could do no better than 47.. M'lver shot 50 at 800 yards and 48 at 900 yards. He has to score only 47 at 900 yards this afternoon to be surp of the championship. His total so far is' 377 out of a possible 400.'. • ' . A^.reflection; of the ideal conditions under which marksmen shot this morning is seen in the fact that over a dozen possibles' were scored at 800 yards...ANOTHER WIN FOR M'IVER. W. M'lver (Petone) and H. V; Croxton (Karori) shot off this monjing to decide the /winner of the -Australian aggregate. Honours went to M'lver, as follows:— 900 yards: M'lver (5) 555; Groxtouy 553.
