THE TRUE LABOUR IDEAL

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —It is hard on the individual labourer that Labour as a party, both in Australia and New Zealand, represents itself as a purely selfish organisation. To get privileges and to keep them at the expense of the-rest of society is surely not the true Labour ideal. In my limited experience I have found as much, honour, magnanimity, and foresight amongst the labouring classes aa elsewhere, and as much enlightened patriotism. "Ourselves alone" has never been the motto of the labouring people I have met. One of them stated his creed plainly in the following words: 'One God, no devilj and 'twenty shillings in'the pound." This man would not sJand for repudiation; but for equality of sacrifice. He would claim the right to give as much as his fellows, "and to pay his debts. We want to hear the voice of considerate Labour, and we hear nothing but a violent clamour for impossibilities. There are thousands of brave, reasonable men and women amongst the labouring classes. Will not one of them take his courage in both hands and speak out? —I- am, etc., ■. : ... . ■ "' R..E.M. •
