CONDITIONS IMPROVING

j The vigorous depression which was responsible for yesterday's unsettled and squally weather passed eastward last night, and with its departure winds in many places changed to southeilies. The southerly winds, however, did not'blow as strongly as expected, owing to the fact that pressure to the north-east of the Domipion has remained high.,, This morning's reports indicate wind's as being light to moderate and variable. It rained yesterday or last night in nearly all^ districts, but the falls wero chiefly light, although in some ■' places in western districts from Taranaki southward fairly heavy totals were recorded. Timarri also had heavy rain last night. Fair to cloudy; weather prevailed in Auckland yesterday, the wind being a fresh westerly. .Wellington had very squally and unsettled weather. In the afternoon some rain "fell, but not enough to do much good to gardens and crops. The wind died down after 8 p.m. Only eight points of rain were recorded yesterday, the month's total locally to date!being the small one of 33 points. Less than a third of an inch in a deficient rainfall for March, which usually averages a little over three inches. ,The weather in Christchurch. 'yesterday was dull ' and hot. The strong ncrth-west wind backed in the evening to the south-west with a shower which' totalled five points of rain. Duneditt had a fine morning, but the afternooi was cloudy with light southerly shtiwors. . . A- genera] improvement in the weather is cow forecasted. Moderate; westerly to (south-westerly winds can be expectedj with fair to cloudy weather. Same scattered showers are still probable, and temperatures will be cool to moderate.
