PAYING APPRENTICES' FEES
THE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
At the monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the' Wellington Technical College last evening, over which Mr. "W. H. Bennett presided, the Director (Mr. J. H. Howell) reported that, ihe school had been vjsited during the jmonth, by the, following departmental "officers :-^-Mr. Longworth, chief supervisor of physical training; Miss Dyer, Supervisor of homo seieneo training; and Messrs. Renyard and Ridling, Aech■■nic'al inspectors. The Director of Technical Education, Mr. La Trobe,' had also'paid a visit to the school. :■ The annual swimming sports- were -held at Te Aro.Baths on ,27th- February (boys) and sth March (girls), the {(conditions being Meal on both days. So fmany entries were received that a num-■fber-df the events had to be postponed ,*to later dates. Nearly 200 senior pupils {had been given the opportunity of seeing the City Corporation milk station in full work on 4th and 13th March, the 'chairman of the board, Mr. W. H. Beniiett, having personally conducted the visits. The annual cricket match against the Wanganui Technical College was played last'week, and resulted in a win for Wellington by eight, wickets as the result of good all-round play. . ' The Plumbing Advisory Committee iefcqininended that, in view of the fact Wat the payment of fees by employers is compulsory in the, case of plumbing apprentices who. make satisfactory attendances, master', plumbers should, be supplied, if possible, witE reports for Jthe first and second terms,, notwithstanding the board's previous resolution that reports should be sent to employers only after the half-yearly examination. fThe Director pointed out, however, that temployers in other trades besides plumbing are required to pay apprentices' fees providing the attendances reach a certain percentage, and that the work entailed in furnishing reports at. the 'fend of each of the fn-st two terms was 'more than the, staff could deal with, pparticularly where the students also took subjects such as , English and mathematics, and it was decided to continue the present practice.
