CLAY BIRD SHOOTING

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Oa Saturday the Wellington Provincial Clay Bird Championship was fired on the Hutt Valley Gun Club's grounds at Taita. Competitors were present from Wavorlcy, Wanganui, Ohakune, Marlon, Feilding, Levin, Masterton, Fcathevston, and the Hutt Valley Gun Club. The competitors included I. G. Watkins, of Rangiora, the South Island champion, and C. Kempton, of Wangamii, the holder o£ the provincial championship. The shooting conditions were 21 birds from the IS yards mark. A tricky north-west wind prevailed, but the standard of marksmanship was high. Ihe championship was won by C. Grey, of the JUnsterton Gun Club, who scored the possible. Only two competitors broke 20 birds, H. Smith, of Wellington, who missed his last bird, and J. Dunlop, of WaBganui. Watkins, of Rangiora, took part in the shooting, and broke 21 birds; but he was not eligible for the championship. £50 Open Handicap Match—This match was one of 21 birds, and was productive of some wonderful shooting. Five possibles were registered, while no less than eight competitors missed only _ one bird apiece. The possible scorers divided the prize money. Wellington Handicap Sweepstake.—The scoring in this match was of a very high order, and six possibles were scored, while six competitors just missed the coveted honour. The scores were: —J. Double Rise Handicap.—The double vise handicap of 10 birds resulted in three members of the Hutt Valley Gun Club, J. Cave, A. L. Cook, and H. H. Morris scoring the possible. Those to break nine birds apiece were C. Grey (Masterton), C. Moore (Wellington), H. Smith (Wellington), and F. Triplow (Lower Hutt), 8 birds each by L. V. Clark (Featherston), ,W. J. H. Haase (Wellington), K. Ingley (Masterton), L. Smith (Featherston; 7 birds each by Dr. G. F. V. Anson (Lower Hutt), P. Bremer (Waverley), N. Irvine (Wellington), O. Kempton (Wauganui), F. Thornton (Wellington; (5- birds each by H. A. Hore (Feildin?), G. E. Bretherton (Ohakune), T. Wrigley (Levin); 5 birds each by C. A. Rofe (Marton), R. Bates ;(Waverley), and E. Ranish (Wellington). Skeet.—The day's shooting concluded jwith a round of skeet. This form of clay bird shooting was new to the visitors, many of whom were very interested in it. The best scores were those of the local men, who are familiar to this form of shooting. H. Smith headed the list with 12 birds, followed by F. Triplow 10, W. J. H. Haase 9, F. E. Thornton 9, and J. Brassell 9. The visitors' best scores were xnade by K. Ingley (Masterton), I. G. WatJkins (Rangiora), and L. P. Clark (Featherston). The referee was Mr. E. Perry.
