HIGH COMEDY BEST
SIRES" PRODUCE . STAKES
High Comedy, never further back than ' I second, outstayed his. opponents, over the v 'l final furlcng of the Manawatu Sires' Pro- . i duee Stakes, and, although at the disj tance it appeared that Cricket Bat might overhaul him, he always held the upper ■ ! hand and was galloping' more smoothly -; i than anything else at the finish. At • j Trehtham he did not race so well in the .' iix-furlong event on the second day as he - did over a furlong less on the first day, -:• j but in. Saturday's contest he made a ~ ! much superior showing at seven furlongs. |. He was favoured with an excellent pas-: ■ sage,, but that was only a. contributing | factor to his victory. The time was'two- ■•■• fifths of a second faster.than the best ~■ . time since the • race was; extended to . seven, furlongs in 1926. . Golden Wings moved away with his !. .customary alacrity, and over the early ' ! "part led High. Comedy, La Poupee, Curie, • ■,': IHchborough, Esteem, and Cricket Bat. : : ;The: last-named improved steadily, and ■- f'.entering the straight High" Comedy and , j Golden Wings had charge from Cricket \ Bat, La Poupee, Eichborough, Curie, Es.teem, Cape Gold, and Oratorian. Cricket j Bat challenged the leaders from the disI tance, but, although he was able to beat ! Golden Wings home by a neck, he was j unable to get to High Comedy, who won j by nearly a length. Esteem was a fan? .. i fourth, followed by Curie, Aspian, Cape /'! Gold, La Poupee, Eichborough, and Trader Horn. . ' -- High Comedy was fifth favourite at a jtqod J>rice, his failure at Trentham probably accounting for his recession in pub- ; Bo estimation. He is a brown gelding by teighton from the Joculator mare Comedieime, who in turn was from the English- :' bred mare Lady D., dam also-of Cosmetic • and- Amplifier. Saturday's was his third success this season. Cricket Bat. the sec- . end favourite, ran up to his Trentham form, but the winner was too good for Ijim. Golden Wings maintained the consistency he has shown through the season, but he ig apparently not quite up to top class: Esteem," Curie, and Aspian all saw , out the extra furlong in.promising style. The hot favonrite, La Poupee, was weakening before, the straight was reached, and j '.. she may never go much beyond sprint distances.
