RIDICULOUSLY EASY

1 NIGHTMARCH'S SUCCESS

FOR AWAPUNI CUP

No horse could have shown more marked superiority over his opponents than Nightmarch did in the Awapuni Gold Cup, the weight-for-age race at Awapuni on ' Saturday, and the efforts of the others to catch him in the straight made an al- ■ most; ridiculous spectacle.. A. M'Aulay has- his champion in ■ great heart, and ■ there is probably not a horse at present in commission in the Dominion, or even in Australia, that could match him at any 'distance. Had the race been six furlongs le'would have won aseasily. The race needs little description, for • Nightmarch' was the leader all the way. Passing.the stands Vertigern, Historic, ' Laughing Prince, and Limerick followed Nightmarch. Historic and . Laughing Prince, in hot pursuit of the. leader, passed Vertigern along the back, but Nightmare*! continued to lengthen the gap. Nightmarch came into the straight four or ■fire lengths ahead of Laughing Prince and Historic, together, with Vertigern close ■ tip, and Limerick well back. Nightmarch bowled along unrestrained over the last furlong, and won with great ease by four lengths from Vertigern, with Historic and Laughing Prince heads away, and Limerick a bad last. .',..''' ' '.- ... -..'.' Nightmarch was- a hot • favourite, but his dividend was quite a fair onefor such a certainty. Vertigern managed the second stake because he was not rushed like .Historic and .Laughing Prince in pursuit,! and he held more in'reserve than they at j the finish. Limerick appears to 'be definitely a past number so far as weight-for-age racing is concerned. The first five furlongs took lmin 4' 4-ssec and- the last. five furlongs lmin-I- I-ssec. The last halfmile was done in better than 49sec -After the race it was learned that a rein "on Laughing Prince became' detached it the start, and L. G; Morris had to ride with a single'strap. In finishing so close- to the minor place-fillers' Laughing ■JPrince thus was responsible for a highly commendable effort.
