VICTORIA COLLEGE SPORTS

RAMSON'S REAPPEARANCE

Time was when Victoria University College used to be represented' in a string of events at sports meetings in Wellington by the best athletes, there were in Wellington in their particular events, and so it was that when.the college's annual inter-faculty tournament came round it was quite a big meeting in, which much interest was take a. But, as at Newtown Park on Saturday afternoon when the representatives of the rival faculties. Arts and Science, and Law and Commerce, met in track and field events,'the.annual fixture of recent years has been a. very much smaller gathering. The college can still lay claim to having some of the city's best athletes, but there are not so many as in years gone by. • Unfortunately for the competitors—and spectators—at Saturday's meeting, an unpleasantly cold wind blew from the north. To some extent the wind may have been expected to help the athletes, but probably most1 found that it was not equal to off-setting completely the very decided uphill grade of Newtown Park. -The times for all events were not fast; still there were some keen contests, the prospect of a trip to Dunedin at Easter to represent the college at the New Zealand University tournament perhaps assisting in this direction. The meeting was notable in the respect that-it drew out again F. S. Eamson, the well-known hurdles champion, who had not competed previously this season. Ramson expressed himself as being keen to get back into form again, and bis performances under the unfavourable conditions, after only having been a few days in training, indicated that it should not take him long to be in pretty, fair, condition. He retained his titles* in the shotputting find 120 yards hurdles championships, and in addition was second in the long jump championship, as well as being a member of the Arts 'and Science '.team which won the relay championship. He did not defend his 440 yards flat championship title, which- passed to J. Watti the winner also of I. Wilby's undefended 880 yards championship title. A welcome reappearance was.also made by. A. D. Priestley, a one-time prominent distance runner, who had not Deen seen out for three years. He started in the 880 yards championship, and although not in training, finished third, close up to the second man. \ The others who did not defend. their titles were C. H. Jenkins (100 yards and 220. yards), who in view of the .strenuous racing he has had lately was' taking a spell; and G. J. Sceats (throwing the javelin and high jump), who is now resident in Auckland. The 100 yards and 220 yards titles went to J. N. Goodson; N. Hislop won the javelin event, arid E. N. Ducker' the high jump. The Arts and Science representatives, with 43% points, easily retained the interfaculty banner from the Law and Commerce team, 24% points. Among the spectators were Professors Kirk, Boyd-Wilson, and Cornish, and the American athlete, Rufus Kiser, who returns to the United States to-morrow afternoon.
