WATER TOO COLD
COOK STRAIT SWiM OFF
MISS GLEITZE MAY RETURN
' After a. final.consultation with Mr. John Tait, of Island Bay, Miss Mercedes Gleitze (Mrs. P. Carey), the world-fam-ous long-distance swimmer, last nighfc decided that she would not m%ko her attempt to swim Cook Strait this season. The temperature of the water yesterday was 58 degrees, which is too cold for a prolonged swim, and it is not likely that temperatures will rise in the near future. On this ground chiefly, and also because there has been a heavy swell in the Strait, which, if it continued, would make much harder work for the swimmer, Mr. Tait' advised Miss Gloitze to abandon her attempt this season. . ' Miss Gloitze has wisely accepted Air. Tait's advice, but she is extremely disappointed at not being able to set out to-day, the Cook Strait swim being the real reason for her Visit to New Zealand. It is very probable that Miss Cilfit.zc will return in 19M, as she is loulh 1.0 gives up the project entirely. Miss Gleitze find her husband have made many friends in Wellington, and all will wish her a more seasonable summer should she come agaiu. .1
